The 4 Things That Actually Matter

1. Load capacity — total, not "cargo"

Marketing loves quoting cargo capacity. What matters is total payload: you + kids + gear, against the bike's gross limit. Add your real numbers up. If you're within 20kg of the max, size up.

2. Motor placement

⚡ Hub motor — simpler, cheaper, great on flat routes.

⚡ Mid-drive — uses your gears, climbs loaded like it's empty. If your route has hills (looking at you, Northcote side of the Yarra), mid-drive earns its keep.

3. Battery size — buy range for your worst day

Loaded bikes chew more battery. A 500Wh battery that gives an unloaded commuter 70km might give a fully loaded cargo bike 35–40km. Plan for your heaviest, hilliest, headwindiest day — not the brochure day.

4. Brakes

100kg+ of bike, kids and shopping needs proper hydraulic disc brakes with big rotors. This is the one spec we won't let anyone compromise on.

Longtail vs Front-Loader vs Trike

Longtail (kids/cargo behind you) — rides most like a normal bike. Best first cargo ebike for most people.

Front-loader / box bike — huge capacity, kids up front where you can see them. Bigger learning curve, bigger footprint.
