Conquer Any Terrain: Your Guide to Electric Mountain Bikes
Share
Purists said e-mountain bikes were cheating.
Then they rode one.
Here's what actually happens on an eMTB: the boring part of mountain biking (grinding up the fire road) shrinks, and the fun part (the descent, the singletrack, the flow) triples.
Same effort. Three times the trails. That's not cheating — that's better maths.
What Actually Matters in an eMTB
1. Torque, not just watts
On steep, loose climbs, torque (Nm) is what gets you up. It's the difference between spinning out on a pinch climb and walking up it beside your bike. When you compare motors, compare torque figures first.
2. Mid-drive motor placement
Serious eMTBs run mid-drive motors for a reason: the weight sits low and central, so the bike corners, jumps and handles like a mountain bike — not like a bike with a motor strapped on. It also drives through your gears, which is exactly what you want on technical climbs.
3. Battery vs weight — the honest trade-off
Bigger battery = more range = more weight to muscle around on descents.
Think about your real rides. Two-hour local loops don't need the biggest battery on the shelf. All-day epic missions do. Buy for your actual riding, not your fantasy riding.
4. Suspension and brakes that match the mission
eMTBs are heavier and carry more speed, so components matter more:
✅ Hardtail — lighter, cheaper, great for smoother trails and gravel
✅ Full suspension — the pick for rough, technical terrain
✅ 4-piston hydraulic brakes with big rotors — heavier bike, more speed, more stopping needed. Simple.
Where to Ride (You're Spoiled Here)
From Alphington you've got the Yarra Trails network practically out the door, and proper mountain bike parks within an easy drive. An eMTB turns "one lap and I'm cooked" into "three laps and I'm grinning."

The Maintenance Truth
An eMTB works harder than a regular MTB: more torque through the drivetrain, more weight through the suspension and brakes.
Translation: chains, pads and rotors wear faster. That's normal, and it's cheap to stay ahead of — if you actually stay ahead of it.
We service eMTBs, motors and batteries right here in the workshop. Ride hard, drop it in, we'll keep it sharp.
