Fat Tyre eBikes: Stability on Sand, Mud and Everything Between

People see a fat tyre ebike and think it's a style choice.

It's not. It's physics.

A 4-inch tyre puts double the rubber on the ground compared to a standard tyre, running at pressures so low a normal bike would pinch-flat instantly.

More contact patch = more grip, more float, more stability. That's the whole trick. And it changes what a bike can do.

Where Fat Tyres Win

🏖️ Sand — normal tyres dig in and stall. Fat tyres float on top. Beach tracks and coastal trails go from impossible to easy.

💧 Mud and wet trails — the big contact patch keeps traction where skinny tyres slide. Melbourne winter, we're looking at you.

🪨 Gravel and rough stuff — the tyre itself is suspension. Corrugations, potholes and tree roots get absorbed before they reach your hands.

🏙️ Everyday streets — honestly? This is the secret. Tram tracks, broken bluestone, wet leaves, gutter lips — fat tyres shrug at all of it. Half our fat-tyre customers never leave the suburbs and love them anyway.

The Trade-Offs (Because We're Honest)

⚠️ Heavier — more rubber, more bike. The motor cancels this out while riding, but you'll notice it lifting the bike onto a car rack.

⚠️ More rolling resistance — slightly more battery used per kilometre. Plan range accordingly.

⚠️ Tyre pressure matters more — the difference between magic-carpet and sluggish is a few PSI. We'll show you the sweet spots for your riding when you pick the bike up.

Pressure Cheat Sheet

🏖️ Soft sand: low and floaty

🌲 Trails and gravel: low-to-middle

🏙️ Pavement: firmer for less drag

The exact numbers depend on your weight and tyre — which is exactly the kind of thing we set up with you in the workshop rather than leaving you to guess.

Who Should Buy One?

✅ You ride mixed surfaces — paths, gravel, grass, the odd beach track

✅ You want maximum stability and confidence, especially as a newer rider

✅ You want one bike that handles everything, not a garage full of specialists

❌ You want maximum speed on smooth tarmac — a commuter ebike will serve you better

Feel It for Yourself

The fat tyre thing makes sense in about 30 seconds of riding. Words don't do it — the test ride does.
