Is Your Bicycle Ready for an Electric Conversion Kit?

Thinking about converting your bike to electric?
Good instinct. But here's the thing nobody selling kits online will tell you:
Some bikes are perfect donors. Some are money pits.
Two minutes with this checklist tells you which one you own.
The 6-Point Donor Bike Checklist
1. Frame material and condition
✅ Steel or quality aluminium — great
⚠️ Carbon — generally a no for hub motors, case-by-case for mid-drives
❌ Cracks, deep rust, bent tubes — walk away
The motor adds torque your frame was never designed for. It needs to be sound.
2. Bottom bracket (for mid-drives)
Bafang and CYC kits fit standard threaded bottom brackets (68–73mm is the sweet spot). Press-fit and oddball standards can still work — with adapters and know-how. If you don't know what your bike has, that's literally a 30-second check for us.
3. Dropouts (for hub motors)
Hub motors put rotational force into your dropouts. Steel dropouts handle it. Thin alloy dropouts need a torque arm — non-negotiable.
4. Brakes
You're adding speed and weight. Rim brakes on a damp Melbourne morning with an extra 10kg? No thanks. Disc brakes — ideally hydraulic — or budget for an upgrade as part of the build.
5. Drivetrain wear
A mid-drive motor sends all its power through your chain, cassette and chainring. If they're already worn, the motor will finish them off in weeks. Fresh drivetrain = happy conversion.
6. Wheels and tyres
True wheels, decent spokes, tyres with meat left on them. The motor doesn't care — but your safety does.
The Budget Reality
Rough guide: a quality kit plus a proper battery is a real investment — and if your donor bike also needs brakes, drivetrain and tyres, the total can creep toward the price of a ready-built ebike.
That's not a reason to skip converting. It's a reason to do the sums first. Great donor bike? Conversion is unbeatable value and you keep the bike you love. Tired donor bike? Put the money into a new machine instead.
