Ridewave Quokka Review: The Light, Easy-Steering Electric Trike for Everyday Trips

Not everyone wants fat tyres. The Ridewave Quokka runs a normal-width 20 x 2.125" tyre, and the result is a trike that feels lighter on its feet, steers more easily and rolls more freely on bike paths than its wide-tyred siblings. For riders who mostly stick to sealed surfaces, that's the better choice.

What it's like to ride

Think of the Quokka as the easy-going everyday trike. The upright riding position keeps your head up and your back straight, the wide seat has an adjustable backrest, and a suspension fork plus suspension seat post keep footpath bumps from reaching your spine.

Because the tyres are narrower, less effort goes into turning the bars, which matters for riders with weak grip or sore shoulders. At 40kg with the battery, it's also one of the lighter trikes we sell, so it's easier to push around a carport or roll out of a shed.

The 65Nm rear hub motor with pedal assist takes care of hills. The half-twist throttle with start assist gets you moving at walking pace from a standstill, so you don't need a strong push on the pedals to pull away. Hydraulic disc brakes on all three wheels with a parking brake make stopping light on the hands, and the rear differential keeps corners smooth. Front light, horn, brake light and indicators are built in.

Two baskets, not one

The Quokka ships with a front basket as well as the rear cargo basket. Day to day that means the handbag or small shopping goes up front where you can see it, and the big shop goes in the back. It's a small thing that makes the trike feel more like a tool and less like a toy.

Getting on, storing it

The step-through is 35cm, one of the lowest in the range, so there's very little to lift a foot over. The seat adjusts from 76 to 97cm, which gives a wide range of leg lengths a comfortable fit. The frame, stem and bars fold to roughly 103 x 77 x 69cm for the garage, shed or car, and the battery is removable and lockable.

Who it suits

  • Riders who mainly use sealed paths, footpaths and quiet streets
  • Anyone who wants lighter steering and an easy, upright position
  • Riders who need a very low step-over (35cm)
  • Rider capacity 120kg; rider height roughly 150-190cm

Note the 120kg rider capacity. If the rider is heavier, or the local paths are gravel and grass, the Wallaby (150kg, 3-inch tyres) is the better pick.

For OTs, physios, support coordinators and support workers

The Quokka suits participants whose goals are regular, low-stress rides on sealed surfaces: getting to the shops, a daily loop for exercise, visiting friends locally. The light steering and low step-over are worth noting for riders with upper-limb weakness or hip and knee limitations. We can bring one to the participant's home for a test ride, do a joint visit with you, and provide a written quote and supporting information for the plan.

We're not an NDIS-registered provider, so we work best with self-managed and plan-managed participants. Agency-managed? Get in touch anyway.
