Which SpeedBox Fits My E-Bike? A Bosch and Shimano Guide
SpeedBox makes tuning chips for Bosch and Shimano e-bike motors. There are a lot of versions, the names look almost identical, and buying the wrong one means it simply won't work. This guide is here to stop that happening.

A SpeedBox removes the 25 km/h assistance limit. A bike tuned this way is no longer a road-legal e-bike in Australia, so it's for private property use. Tuning can also affect your bike's warranty. Every SpeedBox can be switched off to return the bike to standard. Know the rules where you ride, and make the call with your eyes open.
Step one: which motor system do you have?
Bosch Smart System (the newer generation, including Gen 4 and Gen 5 motors):
- Spoke magnet: SpeedBox 1.1, or the 1.1 B.Tuning if you want Bluetooth and the SpeedBox App
- Rim magnet, Gen 4: SpeedBox 1.3 B.Tuning
- Rim magnet, Gen 5 (the newest CX and CX-R): SpeedBox 1.6 B.Tuning
- Performance Line SX with rim magnet: SpeedBox 1.4 or 1.5 B.Tuning, depending on the motor revision
Classic Bosch (Gen 2, 3 and 4, not Smart System): SpeedBox 3.0, or 3.0 B.Tuning for Bluetooth.
Shimano STEPS: SpeedBox 1.2 for E8000, E7000, E6100 and E5000. SpeedBox 1.3 for EP8.
Spoke magnet or rim magnet?
This is the one that catches people. Some Bosch Smart System bikes read wheel speed from a magnet on a spoke. Others use a magnet built into the rim near the valve. The standard 1.1 won't work on a rim magnet bike. Look at your rear wheel before you order, or send us a photo.
Is Bluetooth worth it?
The B.Tuning versions pair with the free SpeedBox App. You get real speed and ride data, adjustable speed limits, and firmware updates over the air. That last one matters, because motor makers update their software and an updatable chip can keep up.
Fitting
Fitting means opening the motor cover and working with small connectors. We fit SpeedBoxes to some bikes on a case by case basis, so get in touch first and tell us what you ride.
