Ridewave Wallaby Review: The All-Rounder Folding Electric Trike

If there's one trike in the Ridewave range that does a bit of everything, it's the Wallaby. Three-inch tyres, a folding frame, a quick-release front wheel, a 45kg-rated rear basket and a 150kg rider capacity. It's the model we point people to when they say "I want a trike, but I'm not sure which one."

What it's like to ride

The 20 x 3.0" puncture-resistant tyres are the sweet spot: wide enough to feel planted and soak up gravel paths and rough footpaths, but not so wide that steering gets heavy. Add a suspension fork and a suspension seat post and the ride is calm, not jarring.

You sit upright on a wide comfort seat with an adjustable backrest. The 65Nm rear hub motor with pedal assist means hills stop being a reason not to go, and the half-twist throttle with start assist lets you pull away from a standstill at walking pace, which is a big deal on a slope or at a busy crossing when you'd rather not stand up on the pedals.

Hydraulic disc brakes on all three wheels with an integrated parking brake mean confident stopping and a trike that stays put while you load the shopping. The rear differential makes corners smooth and predictable. Lights, brake light, indicators and horn are all built in and run off the main battery.

Getting on and off

The step-through is 39cm. The seat adjusts between 79 and 89cm, which suits riders from about 150 to 190cm. Three wheels means no balancing at any point: you sit, you go, you stop, you get off. No foot-down moments at the lights.

Storage and transport

This is where the Wallaby earns its keep for anyone who travels. The frame folds at the centre, the handlebars collapse, and the front wheel is quick-release. Folded it's roughly 108 x 77 x 75cm, which fits SUVs, wagons, caravans and many hatchback boots. The battery is removable and lockable, so you can take it inside to charge. At 45kg with the battery, it's a two-person lift into a vehicle.

Who it suits

  • Riders who want one trike for paths, quiet roads and light gravel
  • Anyone who needs to transport the trike in a car or caravan
  • Riders with balance issues who want an upright, social riding position
  • Rider capacity 150kg; rider height roughly 150-190cm
  • Shopping runs: the rear basket is rated to 45kg, and a front basket is optional

If most riding will be on grass, gravel or rough ground, the Wallaby Plus with 4-inch tyres is the one. If the rider needs a backrest with armrests and a lower, car-seat style position, look at the Platypus.

For OTs, physios, support coordinators and support workers

The Wallaby is a sensible default when a participant's goals are community access and independence across mixed local surfaces, and where transport in a family car or on holiday is part of the picture. We can bring one to the participant's home for an at-home test ride, do a joint visit with you, and provide a written quote and supporting information for the plan. Seat, backrest, bars and grips can be adjusted to suit the rider.

We're not an NDIS-registered provider, so we work best with self-managed and plan-managed participants. Agency-managed? Get in touch anyway.
