Fatboy V2 vs V3: What Changed and Which One to Buy
Share
Right now we've got both generations of Fatboy on the floor, and the question we get most is some version of "is the V3 worth it, or do I grab a V2 while they're cheap?" Honest answer: it depends what you ride and where. Here's the difference, plainly.
What stayed the same
The thing that makes a Fatboy a Fatboy. Fat 20x4 inch tyres, a long two-seater saddle with rear foot pegs, hydraulic disc brakes and a frame rated to carry 180 kg. The Scrambler, Harlem and Bagus all exist in both generations and still look like themselves.
What changed on V3
- You pick a build, not just a model. Every V3 comes as EN15194 Certified, Performance or Ultra. That's its own guide.
- A road-legal option that stays road-legal. The EN15194 Certified build is capped at 25 km/h assist and can't be unlocked. If you'll be on bike paths and bike lanes, this is the one, and it didn't exist on V2.
- More power at the top. Performance gets a 500W motor with 95Nm of torque. Ultra gets Fatboy's FBX system developed with Bafang.
- Suspension. Ultra builds get fully adjustable front and rear suspension.
- New colours. Brushed Alloy, Gloss Black and White Noise across the V3 range.
Why you'd still buy a V2
Price, mostly. V2 Scrambler, Harlem and Bagus are at run-out pricing while stock lasts, which puts a proven two-seater fat bike several hundred dollars under the equivalent V3. The V2 has been around long enough that we know exactly how it behaves, what wears and what to check. If you want a Fatboy for weekends, the beach and bush tracks and you don't need the certified build, a V2 is a lot of bike for the money.
Why you'd go V3
You want the road-legal certified build. You want the latest power system and suspension. Or you just want the current bike with the longest runway for parts and support. V3 is the one Fatboy is building forward from.
Our take
Riding mostly on paths and roads around Melbourne: V3 EN15194 Certified. Riding mostly off-road or on private property and watching the budget: V2. Want the best of the range and don't mind paying for it: V3 Ultra.
