Fatboy Scrambler V3: Certified vs Performance vs Ultra

The Scrambler is the bike that put Fatboy on the map, and the V3 is the biggest update it has ever had. It also comes in three builds that look identical in photos: EN15194 Certified, Performance and Ultra.

Pick the wrong one and you've either paid for power you can't use where you ride, or bought a bike that can never do what you wanted. Here's how to get it right.

What every Scrambler V3 gets

The good news is that the things that make a V3 a V3 are on all three builds:

• FBX power architecture, developed with Bafang, which ties the battery, motor and controller into one system
• Fully adjustable front and rear suspension, with preload, compression and rebound tuning up front. Fatboy calls it an industry first for fat tyre e-bikes.
• Custom Fatboy 4-piston brakes with cooling fins, metal sintered pads and 203mm discs
• A genuine two-seater setup: rear footpegs and a 180 kg load rating, so you can bring someone along
• 20Ah Samsung lithium-ion battery with a 4 to 6 hour charge
• Shimano 7-speed drivetrain, puncture-resistant fat tyres, LCD colour display, throttle with isolator, rear cargo rack and a super-bright headlight with daytime running
• 2 year all-inclusive warranty, and six colours

All three weigh in at 45 kg including the battery. That's a lot of bike, which is exactly why the brakes and suspension matter.

The three builds, side by side

EN15194 Certified: the one we point most Melbourne riders to

The Certified build is made in line with EN15194:2017, the European EPAC standard. Pedal assist stops at 25 km/h and it can't be unlocked. The throttle works on its own up to 6 km/h, which is handy for getting a 45 kg bike rolling, and up to 25 km/h when you're pedalling.

In Fatboy's assessment that puts it in line with national EPAC legislation. If you're riding bike paths, streets and the school run, this is the build that makes sense. You give up nothing on suspension or brakes.

Performance: more shove, sharper price than the Ultra

The Performance build runs a 500W Bafang hub motor with 95Nm of torque on the 48V system. You feel it in acceleration and on climbs, especially two-up or loaded with gear. It's restricted to 25 km/h for public use.

Ultra: the flagship

The Ultra moves to the 52V system with 100Nm of torque. It's restricted to 25 km/h for public use, with a private property unlock to 50 km/h. It also carries UL2849 certification on the frame, battery and charger, and the display can charge your phone. This is the one for acreage, farm tracks and private land, or for the rider who simply wants the top spec.

So which one?

• Commuting, bike paths, family duties around town: EN15194 Certified.
• Hilly area, regularly carrying a passenger or gear: Performance.
• Private property to ride on, or you want the flagship: Ultra.
